The short. Beads per inch is equal to 25.4 divided by the diameter of your bead in mm since 1 inch is exactly 25.4 mm and multiply by the finished length of your beaded project, then subtract whatever is taking up non-bead space then round up. The chart gives you an initial count. Your actual beaded pattern gives you the real count.

What is a bead count estimate and what is it not?

To be fair to the tool, start with a true statement: a bead count on a chart is an estimate, a valid one but an estimate all the same, and an answer to only one specific question: given a completed beaded length of one specific style, approximately how many beads of one specific size go into it? That's the thing you want.

It doesn't even know your 8mm rounds are a smidge over 8mm when you open them because the stated diameter is theoretical, and the real bead has its own bossy opinion about the space it needs.

Great for: single size strung design where you want a shopping number which is not a complete guess. Weaker for: anything woven, knotted or blended - more explanation below.

The inputs you provide (guide-only, no live calculator)

It's a worksheet, not a live widget on the page. It's an instruction and a cheat sheet, but not a calculator that spits a number out into the box. Nothing is "installed" so nothing is guaranteed to count up to an exact number. You do the four calculations yourself, or on your phone, with beads in the background. Small math.

The four inputs you feed in:

  • Beaded length of finished item. The beaded part that you really want, not the length of your wrist (people often forget this). The length of the actual beaded run.
  • Bead diameter (mm). Nominal size (6mm, 8mm, 10mm whatever you are stringing).
  • Occupied length excluding beads. Clasp, jump rings, a center charm, knots, gaps, everything measured and not estimated.
  • How much you're comfortable with. An allowance percent is something you'll tell me and I won't just give you a percentage because some makers have ZERO, some will provide an actual cushion for lost or broken beads (isn't that nice of them.).

Output as a bead count you round up. Number 1 rule of all of the rules of this whole page: all input above is something you provide from your own project. I am not making up one universal waste percentage and then playing pretend that it applies to every bracelet on earth because it most certainly does not.

Tip. Write all four numbers on a scrap of paper before you start to multiply. Half of all miscounts I see happen because students convert wrist size instead of beaded length, or because they forget to take the clasp into account.

How the beads per inch (bpi) chart actually functions

Now here's the engine, that's one line. One inch is exactly 25.4 mm, a number that is exact and does not round or drift. So theoretical number of beads per inch for any round bead is 25.4 divided by the bead diameter in mm, which for 6mm is 25.4 ÷ 6 = 4.23 per inch and for 8mm is 25.4 ÷ 8 = 3.18. That about sums it up!

The deal, and it's a good one, is that this is assuming beads sit dead flush (hole to hole, no gaps, no thread bits showing) and dead straight (which of course never actually happens on a curved wrist). So use this as a theoretical stranding ceiling: your actual strand will generally require a notch or two less. The comparison below uses the nominal diameter as the theoretical star, not the true pitch of your project.

The per-7 and per-8 columns are already rounding up, and are the exact length without any shortening for a clasp, so they are deliberately a little long. The conservative direction to be wrong in. Short is where it really hurts.

Counting one size design from finished length

The order of plain single size strand stands.

  1. Determine your completed beaded length. The beaded run desired, in inches. For example 7 inches.
  2. Convert to millimeters. Multiple by 25.4. So 7 × 25.4 = 177.8 mm to fill.
  3. So, subtract the length that the non-bead is occupying. Just that portion that isn't already in the measured repeat. My little clasp and two jump rings could subtract, what, 10 to 14mm. Check yours. Let's say 12mm. Now we have 165.8mm for beads.
  4. Divide by the bead diameter. 165.8 ÷ 6 = 27.6 beads.
  5. Round to the whole bead. 28 beads. Round up for coverage; always, as you can't string 0.6 of a bead, and a short strand is a wasted strand.
  6. Include your allowance if you desire one. Cracked bead, dropped bead, no threading bead. Your decision.
  7. Sanity check the physical placement. Round-up got you a whole-bead count, but you still need a symmetry check. An even number is symmetrically balanced differently than an odd number.

Example worked out, 6mm beads, 7" beaded length, 12mm of clasp hardware. Run it: 177.8mm less 12mm (hardware) gives you 165.8mm, divided by 6, gives 27.6, 28 beads rounded up. Forget the clasp, you would hit 30 (the raw chart number) and be two beads short, nothing for one bracelet but if you multiply this out for a batch of 20 it really adds up.

Another worked example, 8mm. An 8 inch run, same 12mm clasp. Same 8mm rounds, as above. 8 × 25.4 gives us 203.2mm minus 12mm gives us 191.2mm divided by 8 gives us 23.9, round up to 24 beads. The chart's per-8 column said 25, no deduction, so that little clasp saved a whole bead. That one bead is the difference between the chart and the mat.

Tip. Don't cheat on the clasp deduction. Lobster or fancy clasp + soldered ring + tail chain = 20mm+. Tiny magnetic clasp, only about 6mm. Measure the actual length of the piece you're using not estimate from memory.

The effect of spacers, charms, clasps, knots, and gaps on the number of links in the chain

This doubles as a clean chart number from a bracelet that fits. Your strand has a new occupant that is not the bead you are counting, length-wise, and it quietly robs the millimeter we won't subtract you and your count runs high and the bracelet runs long. The usual suspects:

  • Clasp and jump rings. The one most people forget to get right. Measure the clasp closed, rings and tail added.
  • Spacers. Those tiny 2mm and 3mm discs really do add up. Think ten 3mm spacers and that's a whopping 30mm of "lost" space.
  • A center charm or focus. A chunky focus can easily be 15 to 20mm.
  • Knots. Between beads (pearl style) knotting adds length per knot. Small per knot, large over 40 knots.
  • Practiced omissions. Space for the stretch cord, or the flow of the design? The used length, though unfilled.

Hold to: subtract only the occupied length not already incorporated in the measured repeat. If a measured repeat already contains the spacer baked in (next section), do not go back and subtract that same spacer again double-counting is its own silent miscount that ultimately shortchanges you.

Decision checklist for non-bead length, run it before you trust the count:

  • Did I remove the rings and clasp? (At least most of the time yes.)
  • Are spacers within my repeat unit, or are they separate? Subtract only if separate.
  • Focal or center piece? Just measure and subtract.
  • Knotting? Here's where you would measure the length between each knot along the strand.
  • Any deliberate holes? Treat them as filled.

Measuring a mixed-size repeat unit

This is where the tidy chart just sort of quietly stops being helpful and where a lot of folks get hurt. Combine sizes, sprinkle in some spacers in a design pattern, or insert a few shaped beads and that "one bead diameter" calculation just falls apart, because a strand of alternating 8mm rounds and 4mm spacers isn't an 8mm strand and isn't a 4mm strand. It's something else entirely.

The solution is much easier and certainly more precise: the repeat unit alone. Arrange just the pattern repeat, again, using the real beads, in the real order, on your bead board, with the actual beads as close as they'll ever sit in production, and measure the repeat length in mm, divide the total minimum beaded length (subtracting off the clasp length if you prefer) by the repeat length to get the number of repeats, round up, then multiply out for how much of each of those beads you'll need to buy.

Measured-repeat worksheet, worked:

  1. One repeat = 8mm round + 4mm spacer + 8mm round + 4mm spacer (as measured on the mat: around 24mm). (Not 24 exactly all the time, real beads are different which is the reason why we measure instead of adding nominal sizes.)
  2. Available beaded length if subtracting 12mm clasp on a 7 inch: 165.8mm.
  3. 165.8 ÷ 24 = 6.9 repeats. (Round up to 7.)
  4. So 7 repeats × 2 rounds = 14 rounds. 7 × 2 spacers = 14 spacers.

I always prefer the measured repeat over the nominal math when it comes to mixed sizes, irregular shapes, spacers, charms, etc. The mat never lies about how beads will sit. The nominal chart is just an average, and a mixed strand is not average.

Tip. Hang the repeat under just a tiny bit of tension, the way it will actually sit strung, not slack. Slack beads go long. Strung beads pull in a bit.

When the formula stops working

Honestly, there are entire classes of beadwork where beads-per-inch math is just about a complete waste of time. Part 2 of honesty. For the projects listed below, the chart is only a rough gut-check at best, not something you would order to.

  • Peyote, brick and other off loom stitches. Bead count is determined by the stitch, the tension of the thread and the shape of the beads, not the linear distance. Peyote with Delicas in it does not occupy the same space as a strung line.
  • Loom work. Changes in count through warp and weft. Width is as critical as length in loom work.
  • Bead crochet. Rope diameter, number of stitches, use the beads, its not a single strand.
  • Irregular shapes. Chips, nuggets, sticks, freeform. There's no dependable "per inch" for a bead of which each length is a different size.
  • Tension-sensitive work. Anything where the pull out changes the finished length. Your tension is not mine.

Warning. For weaving, and projects where tension is critical, do a sample swatch and measure the amount you actually used, then multiply up. Patterns will cheat you. They will cheat with conviction. Measure a 1 inch sample row, and then go to town.

Wrist fit vs finished length vs bead count

Three, five, eight bead sizes all performing three different functions, and folks mash them all together and then ask where the fit is. A bead bracelet size chart and a beads per inch chart are actually for three separate functions, and using one when you needed the other is how a so-called 7-inch bracelet doesn't fit.

  • Wrist measurement. The physical circumference of a person's wrist. This is a body measurement.
  • Measured finished length of bracelet / inner circumference. Wrist plus ease. A tight fitting bracelet adds maybe a half inch to the wrist girth, a looser one may give a few more inches. This is the length that the bracelet needs to be.
  • Bead count. How many beads would you have in that completed beaded length. That's what this page is for.

Here the real flow is: wrist, add ease, finished length, subtract clasp, bead count. Scaling to batch quantity for a single design

Planning a batch? Not just the one? For prepping a craft fair table, or a short run of kits. The amount per piece is the unit; the batch is a multiple, but it depends on only a few honest inputs, only you providing: counts per piece, number of projects, your breakage tolerance, and the pack count (x beads, really, count it out, don't estimate).

Batch math (project planning): beads per piece × number of projects, add your allowance, divide by the verified pack quantity, round up. For instance, 28 beads × 10 bracelets = 280, add a little allowance, let's say 294, and if a verified pack contains 50 beads then that's 294 ÷ 50 = 5.9, round up to 6 packs. That 6 assumes the pack actually contains 50 beads, which is why you verify it before placing an order, not after.

This does not guarantee profit, margin, sell-through, or a nice, easily remembered universal reorder number. Things to verify before placing an order

  • Beaded length, not wrist. Always double check you have worked from the finished beaded length.
  • Occupied length subtracted. Subtract length occupied by clasp, rings, focal, spacers, knots, gaps from overall length.
  • Rounded up. Whole beads and whole repeats, up not down.
  • Layout checked. Even/odd for centering, symmetry looks right.
  • Mixed sizes as a repeat, not added as nominal sizes.
  • Woven work test-swatched. Take nothing for stitch work formula.

Standard 6mm round (single strand) for plain 7". The theoretical chart reads about 30. Deduct small clasp (we'll use 12mm) and it's down to about 28. Round up and check your pattern (and the clasp size changes the number).

What if I apply one allowance rate to all the projects?

No, and you really shouldn't. Allowance is your input, "estimated" from the seed type, breakage rate, batch size. Delicate or dyed beads would perhaps want more cushion, hardy rounds almost nothing. There simply is not a "waste" number that works universally.
