Metal component selection guide
Choose Alloy Beads by Construction, Finish and Project Fit
Browse alloy beads and decorative metal beads for jewelry making, beadable pens, keychains and other small DIY projects. This collection also includes charms, pendants, patches and decorative bases. Choose the component type first: a hanging charm, a multi-hole bead and a surface decoration need different connections, even when their front designs look similar.
Use the product grid above to compare actual designs and open the selected listing for its current dimensions, colors, pack quantities, price and availability. Match the exact option to your project before adding a larger quantity.
Construction first
Find the stringing path, hanging loop or attachment surface. Check the back and side as well as the decorative face.
Fit in three dimensions
Compare width, height and thickness with the available space. Outside size and hole size describe different measurements.
Then finish and pack
Select the metal color and decoration, then check the number of pieces in that specific option. Pack choices vary by design.
Choose a bead, charm, patch or decorative base
- Drilled and multi-hole beads: follow the opening path through the component. FS10449 is listed as an approximately 12 × 14 mm heart with eight holes; FS10794 is listed as an approximately 9 × 12 mm heart with four holes. Hole count describes construction, not hole diameter or the number of cords that will fit.
- Hanging parts: FS6101 is listed as a 16 mm metal base bead with hanging holes. Check which opening carries the main assembly and which is intended for a hanging detail. For metal charms for jewelry making and pendant components, confirm the loop, connecting ring and normal hanging direction.
- Patches and embellishments: FS101041 is listed as an approximately 32 × 32 mm crystal flower metal patch. A broad decorative face does not establish a through-hole. Check the back and intended fixing surface before selecting an attachment method or adhesive.
A bead can sit on a cord, wire or rod; a charm or pendant usually needs a suitable connection to hang. A metal patch may instead decorate another component. Choose the construction that supports your intended front view, rather than using the words “bead,” “charm” and “patch” interchangeably.
For a heart or star accent that will hang from a necklace, check that the selected piece has a suitable hanging connection. A multi-hole heart bead is not automatically a ready-to-hang charm; choose the chain and connector separately.
Compare the shape with the space in your layout
For a focal detail, compare the whole outline with the neighboring beads and findings. Heart, butterfly, star and teardrop designs can take up different amounts of space around their openings. A wide face may crowd a ring or touch the next bead even when the cord passes through.
For smaller decorative bases, FS5391 is listed at 10 mm and FS6100 at 12 mm. Use those labels to compare the listed outside size, then check the full profile and opening separately; neither number gives a hole diameter or proves a round shape.
The Rhinestone Butterfly Multi-Stone Large Metal Beads listing gives an approximate 30 × 35 mm outside size. That is useful when choosing a larger decorative accent; it does not describe its hole size. The Bright Silver & Gun-Black oval rhinestone design is listed at approximately 12 × 10 mm. An elongated oval profile changes the visible outline and the room needed for movement; it does not prove a rectangular, spherical or interchangeable bead shape.
The Square rhinestone design is listed at approximately 21 × 17 × 10 mm, while the Teardrop Rhinestone Flower design is listed at 27 × 27 × 20 mm. Compare those three outside measurements with the space in your layout and check opening direction separately. A square label and unequal dimensions do not establish a cube or a separate rectangular-bead construction. A listing that uses “hollow” for an openwork decoration does not establish a hollow shell, measured wall thickness or light weight. Check weight separately when balance matters; a “heavy-duty” name alone gives no measured weight or load rating.
Match the opening to your cord, wire, rod or connector
- Check the actual path. Confirm the number, direction and usable diameter of the openings. The Twisted Spiral butterfly design is specifically listed with a large hole, but the words “large hole” still do not supply a measured clearance for your rod or folded cord.
- Include the assembled thickness. A folded cord, two wire passes, a knot or a connector can need more room than one bare strand. Check the complete arrangement instead of comparing only the bead's outside size with the cord label.
- Allow room for movement. Lay out the actual parts and check rotation, front-facing orientation and contact between decorated surfaces. A hanging loop and a center-drilled passage are different attachment paths.
- Check the finished project. For a bracelet or necklace, assess total length, comfort, edges, skin contact and clearance around the clasp. For earrings or badge reels, check total weight and balance. For a keychain, bag charm or zipper pull, allow clearance around rings and moving connectors.
For a beadable pen, compare the total bead-and-spacer stack with the usable rod length, then check that the top fitting closes normally. Passing one bead over the rod does not establish that the complete stack will fit.
A product title mentioning pens or jewelry is a starting point for selection. It does not confirm every pen rod, elastic cord, paracord, hair application or assembly method. If an important opening or fit detail is missing, use the help options below before ordering around an assumed measurement.
Separate metal color, base material and decoration
Compare silver-colored, gold-colored and gun-black options as appearance choices, then read the material and finish information for the particular component. A metallic appearance is not evidence of sterling silver, solid gold or a specific alloy composition. The terms “alloy” and “Metal Based” do not identify one collection-wide base mixture or plating process.
Rhinestones, enamel details and the surrounding metal can have different colors. On the Bright Silver & Gun-Black oval design, option labels include Rose Gold alongside other decorative colors: read the full selected label rather than assuming it means a rose-gold metal body. A rhinestone-decorated metal bead is not automatically a natural crystal bead or a diamond-set component.
A densely rhinestone-decorated surface does not confirm a particular stone-setting method. Compare the visible decoration and the listing's construction details rather than assuming how the stones are attached.
For colorful enamel charms, compare the enamel detail with the metal-tone setting. Check whether “random mix” applies to the colors or designs offered; it does not establish a mixed-metal composition or guarantee one of every pictured color. A gold-plated description on a specific pendant should stay with that pendant and selected option.
If your project requires a particular metal composition, skin-contact suitability or documented certification, obtain information for that exact item before choosing it. Color and category names do not establish nickel-free, lead-free, hypoallergenic, waterproof or child-safe performance. Finish durability also depends on the actual product; there is no collection-wide coating-life promise here.
During handling, keep decorated faces away from rough hardware that may rub them. For repeat work, compare received packs under the same lighting before combining batches. Choose a cleaning method from the actual material and decoration information rather than applying one treatment to every metal-colored component.
Compare pack quantities before buying in bulk
Pack size is a product option, not a collection-wide standard. FS6101 offers labels for 20 and 200 pieces, while FS101041 offers labels for 10 and 100 pieces. These examples belong to those listings; check their current options when ordering. Other designs may offer a different set of quantities.
For bulk metal beads or charms, compare the same design, color or mix, dimensions and number of pieces. Calculate the price per piece from the selected pack price and its stated count; a lower total pack price does not necessarily give a lower cost per usable component. Check shipping for your destination separately when comparing order costs.
ZoeDIY supports trying an existing smaller pack before ordering more. Where a smaller option is offered, use it to build one complete reference assembly with your intended hardware. Keep the chosen option, component order, opening direction and finished dimensions with that sample so you can compare a later order. Smaller packs are not offered for every item, and this is not a free-sample offer or a promise of identical batches.
Continue with the component or project you need
When the main job is separating larger beads or controlling spacing, compare dedicated alloy spacer beads. For a specific color, motif or lettering task, use the corresponding collection and check its actual component types.
For the wider supply list and a suitable making path, continue to the relevant project page. The components above are supplies to choose for your assembly; a pendant or charm listing does not by itself include a finished necklace.
Alloy Bead Questions
Can I swap a four-hole bead for an eight-hole design?
Do not assume it is a direct replacement. Map where the cord or connector enters and exits, then compare the outside dimensions, opening direction and desired front view. Make a complete sample: the new piece may rotate differently or change the spacing even when both designs accept the same strand.
What if the hole size or pen fit is not clear?
Not every listing includes a measured hole size. ZoeDIY uses digital calipers for bead dimensions and openings; available measurements differ by item. Contact us with the product link, the exact option and the rod, cord or wire dimensions you plan to use. For a specific pen, provide its model or a clear photo and dimensions so we can review the available information or check the combination where practical. This does not mean every combination has already been tested.
How do I turn a pack count into a project quantity?
Divide the stated pieces per pack by the number of that component used in one finished item, rounding down to complete items. For example, a verified 20-piece pack supplies ten items that each use two pieces, before any allowance you choose for trials or replacements. For random mixes, do not assume the pack contains enough of one particular color or motif for a matching batch.
